VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol is a technology that allows users to communicate by way of Internet Protocol. There are several VoIP services to choose from and the technology is used regularly around the world. However, these services vary in how you can use the service. There are some services that need just a phone connection in order to use them, while other VoIP services only require an Internet connection in order to place calls.
Some additional differences that you will find among the different VoIP services include some restrictions, like only having the ability to make phone calls to others that are using the service. There are some services that allow you to call any telephone number, no matter if they use the service or not. In fact, with this type of service you should be able to call any number, even if it is to the other side of the world.
VoIP is one of the most useful telephone systems to be developed recently. This technology works by converting the voice signal from a phone to a digital signal that can go over the Internet. In the situation where you are calling a number on a regular line, the signal will be converted back to a voice signal.
Not all VoIP services are the same and all sorts of different features can be offered, depending on what you sign up for. Calls can be made using the PC or laptop, or alternatively a specially engineered VoIP phone. With other services you can use your regular phone. Additionally, certain public areas such as airports have hot spots that you can connect to using your mobile phone. The Skype application for the iPhone was a miestone in allowing VoIP calls to be made from mobile phones.
Using Your VoIP Service
- VoIP Hardware. The first thing to do is to get your hands on the right VoIP calling equipment. This includes a high-speed Internet connection. Other pieces of equipment are dependant on the service that you choose. You will need your computer, and with some services you will also need a special VoIP phone. Other services will let you use a regular phone, but you will need to purchase an adapter.
- Making Calls. When using a telephone, both the regular phone and the VoIP phone, you will make and receive calls in the same way you would with any other type of phone service. When making or receiving calls from your computer you simply access the application and follow the directions of your service provider.
- Making Long Distance Calls. One of the reasons that VoIP has become so popular is that it provides a way to make low cost long distance calls. To place a long distance call is usually the same as with any other phone service. Depending on your service provider, some long distance calls may be free. Others will cost a certain per minute rate. The cost of this wil usually be charged to the credit card which you register.
You will find that once the software is in place, making calls is very simple. More often than not, all you need to do is download the applicable software and then hook your phone up to the computer.
