Obviously not everybody is allowed to work remotely as lots of careers require workers to consistently attend their office or travel to perform their duties in person. But for those of us who are able to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and present some practical wisdom by distributing it on the web in the hope that I could give others valuable timesavers for adapting to remote working or managing remote workers.
I must tell you you that there are many people out there who will try and make you purchase courses for large sums of money, take my word for it you don’t need to do this.
I am lucky enough to be permitted to work in whatever location I choose and just about everyone who asks me what I do for a living wants to understand how I manage to work remotely. Don’t be mislead here I am still refining the science of remote working as everyday I come across tribes on the Internet who tell me about new approaches and I am repeatedly finding new technologies and ways that make my life easier and make me more efficient.
Throughout the past seven years I have immensely adapted my working methods to let me to do just about all of my work remotely with a selection of online tools and unfaltering self management. One afternoon whilst browsing the net I unearthed Quickbooks online and this made me think about what just might be possible. My encounter with ’cloud’ based ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was inspiration for me and the start of my ‘remote working life.
I have to state up front that productively working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self management. Working remotely also means teaching your team members, managers and clients as to what they can expect and how they will stay in touch with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Staying focused and maintaining concentration’ I talk about how to focus.
