Obviously not all of us can work remotely as lots of careers require people to go to their office or travel to perform their tasks in person. But for those of us who are able to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and give some practical guidance by distributing it on the Internet in the hope that I could give others helpful advice for adapting to remote working or managing remote workers.
I should warn you that there are many self proclaimed ‘gurus’ online who will try and persuade you to purchase e-books for enormous sums of money, take my word for it you don’t have to do this.
I am lucky enough to be able to work in whatever location I choose and just about everybody who asks me what work I do wants to get details of how I am able to work remotely. Don’t be mislead here I am still refining the art of remote working as all of the time I find tribes on the web who teach me new ways and I am constantly finding new systems and ways that make my life simpler and make me more effective.
During the past 7 years I have slowly but surely adapted my working processes to allow me to do most of my work remotely with a box of web tools and solid self management. One early morning whilst exploring the web I unearthed Quickbooks online and this made me think about what just might be possible. The discovery of ’hosted’ ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was the turning point for me and the start of my ‘remote working experience.
I want to tell you up front that proficiently working remotely is as much about the systems as it is about self management. Working remotely also means imparting to your co-workers, managers and customers as to what they can expect and how they will keep in touch with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Fundamental behaviours – Basic discipline’ I discuss how to focus.
