Obviously not all of us can work remotely as many jobs require individuals to go to their employers premises or travel to undertake their tasks in person. But for those of us given the opportunity to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and offer some practical advice by writing and publishing it on the net in the hope that I could give others helpful advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I should warn you that there are groups of people online who will try and make you purchase videos for significant sums of money, believe me you don’t have to do this.
I am privileged to be permitted to work wherever I choose and just about everyone who asks me what work I do wants to learn how I am able to work remotely. Don’t be fooled here I am still developing the art of remote working as each day I discover people online who tell me about new approaches and I am continually finding new technologies and ways that make my life easier and increase my productivity.
During the past 7 years I have steadily adapted my working practices to allow me to do the majority of my work remotely with a mixture of web tools and rigid self discipline. One afternoon whilst browsing the web I uncovered Quickbooks online and this made me aware of what just might be possible. The encounter with ’cloud’ based ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a ‘light bulb’ moment for me and the start of my ‘remote working life.
I should mention up front that effectively working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means getting across to your colleagues, superiors and customers as to what they can expect and how they will communicate with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Fundamental behaviours – Basic discipline’ I write about how to focus.
