What is VoIP?
VoIP may look familiar to you and you may associate it with phone services but how does it really work?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In non-technical terms this means instead of data traveling over the old phone system it uses standard Internet protocols like when you visit a website to transfer voice data. VoIP is very popular lately because it is far cheaper than standard phone services and isn’t restricted to any geographical area, only to places with an Internet connection. VoIP services are simply far cheaper than traditional telephone networks.
Everyone is interested in saving money, and VoIP can help you to do this. Most Americans pay a flat monthly fee for local telephone calls and a per-minute charge for any long-distance calls. However, with the use of a VoIP phone calls can be placed across the Internet, completely free of charge but for paying the cost of your Internet bill of course.
Types of Calls
There are actually a few different types of calls that can be made here. These telephone calls can either be placed to other VoIP devices, or to normal telephones on the PSTN. This makes it incredibly easy and convenient to get started if you want to make the switch, and there are three methods that you can use to connect to a VoIP network: using a VoIP telephone, using a normal telephone with a VoIP adapter, and using a computer with speakers and a microphone.
If you are interested in learning more about this before making the switch, there are several terrific options available to you here. The best idea however would be to read some of the many different books that are available on the subject.
The Internet is also a great resource, and not only for learning about this service and all the advantages that it has to offer, but as well you will be able to find all the equipment that you would need to make the switch online as well.
VoIP has a lot of advantages and benefits but make sure you check all the costs and benefits and compare them and be sure that you are comfortable making the switch. As it becomes more standard and popular services will certainly improve so consider using both services temporarily while you adjust to the change.
